Plug-In Solar in the U.S.: How It Works, Where It’s Legal & What You Can Buy
Plug-in solar offers a smaller, simpler way to use solar power at home. Here’s how the technology works, where it stands in the U.S., how batteries fit in, and what to check before buying.
Plug-in solar is starting to make small-scale home solar a lot simpler. Instead of installing a full rooftop system, you can use a few solar panels and a small grid-connected inverter to help power the things already running in your home. Some newer systems also add batteries, so solar collected during the day can be used later.
The idea is already well established in parts of Europe, and the U.S. market is beginning to catch up. New safety standards, state laws, and purpose-built products are arriving quickly.
The basic idea
Solar panels make electricity, a grid-interactive inverter feeds a limited amount into your home, and your appliances use that power before drawing the rest from the utility. A battery can save some of the solar for later. The big catch is that state rules and product requirements still vary.
What Is Plug-In Solar?
A basic plug-in solar system uses one or more solar panels connected to a small grid-interactive inverter. The inverter converts the panels’ DC electricity into AC electricity that can help power your home.
If your home is using 700 watts and your solar system is producing 400 watts, the home may only need to pull the remaining 300 watts from the grid. You are not trying to power the entire house. You are simply reducing how much electricity you buy while the panels are producing power.
That can make a small system useful for everyday loads such as refrigerators, internet equipment, computers, lights, TVs, fans, and the many smaller devices that stay on during the day.
Why people call it balcony solar
Balconies are one obvious place for a small removable array, especially for renters. But panels can also go on patios, sheds, fences, ground racks, and other suitable sunny locations. That is why we use plug-in solar as the broader term.
How is it different from rooftop solar?
Mostly, it is smaller and simpler. A conventional rooftop system may involve a large array, permanent electrical work, permits, utility interconnection, and professional installation. Plug-in solar is aimed at people who want to start with a much smaller amount of generation.
That makes it especially interesting for renters, apartment and condo residents, homeowners who do not want rooftop solar, and anyone who only wants to offset part of an electric bill.
The Four Main Types of Plug-In Solar
The category is already expanding beyond a simple panel-and-inverter kit. These are the main setups you are likely to see.

Simple solar-only products are already available in the U.S. Current examples include the APsystems EZ1-LV and Hoymiles HiFlow Pro LV. Battery-equipped systems are newer here, while Europe already has a much wider range of integrated and retrofit storage products.
What Does a Battery Add?
A battery lets you move solar energy from the time it is produced to the time you actually want to use it.
Without storage, plug-in solar works best while the sun is shining and your home is already using electricity. With storage, extra midday solar can be saved for the evening.
Newer systems can go further. A smart meter can watch how much electricity the house is using and adjust battery output to match it. Some systems support zero-export modes, scheduled charging, time-of-use plans, or charging from the grid when rates are low.
This is where plug-in solar starts to look less like a small solar kit and more like a compact home energy system.
One number to watch
Battery capacity and grid output are different things. A system may store several kilowatt-hours of energy while still being limited to a few hundred watts—or around 1,200 watts—of grid-connected output. A larger battery mainly gives you more runtime unless the inverter/output limit also increases.
Will Plug-In Solar Work During a Power Outage?
Usually not through your normal household wiring. Grid-interactive equipment is designed to stop feeding power into the home/grid connection when utility power disappears. This anti-islanding protection helps protect utility workers and electrical equipment.
That does not make a battery useless during an outage. Many battery systems and portable power stations can still run appliances plugged directly into their own AC outlets. Some also have dedicated backup or EPS outputs.
Important safety point
A normal portable power station should never be connected backward into a household outlet with a male-to-male cord. Legitimate plug-in systems use purpose-built grid-interactive hardware to control synchronization, current flow, and outage isolation.
If your goal is to keep normal household circuits powered during an outage, you need equipment designed to isolate the home from the utility, such as an approved transfer or backup system.
Is Plug-In Solar Legal in the U.S.?
In a growing number of states, yes. But the rules are still changing quickly.
As of September 8, 2026, our review identifies special plug-in solar pathways already in effect in Utah, Maine, Colorado, Maryland, and Vermont. Connecticut has enacted rules taking effect October 1, 2026. New Hampshire and Virginia follow on January 1, 2027, and New Jersey on March 1, 2027.
California’s SB 868 is still an enrolled bill at the governor. New York’s SUNNY Act has passed both chambers, but we are not treating it as effective law until a dated enactment action appears.
State rules can differ on maximum output, utility notification, electrical work, smart meters, export treatment, and required certifications.
The part that is easy to miss
A state allowing plug-in solar does not automatically mean every product qualifies there. The law, the product’s certification, and the exact system configuration all have to line up.
The new UL 3700 framework was created specifically for interactive plug-in photovoltaic equipment and systems, giving states and manufacturers a clearer safety path than they had only a year ago.

What Can You Buy in the U.S. Right Now?
The U.S. market is still small, but there are already several useful examples of where it is headed.
APsystems EZ1-LV
The APsystems EZ1-LV is a purpose-built 120V plug-in microinverter for up to two panels. APsystems rates it for up to 900W of continuous AC output and says it is CSA Certified to UL 3700 standards. Output can also be configured lower where local rules require it.
Hoymiles HiFlow Pro LV
Hoymiles HiFlow Pro LV comes in 360W, 391W, 420W, 450W, and 500W versions. Those smaller steps are useful because several state laws treat lower-output systems differently from larger ones.
EcoFlow STREAM
EcoFlow STREAM Ultra adds a 1.92kWh LFP battery, up to 2,000W of solar input, and a built-in grid-tied microinverter. EcoFlow currently says plug-in installation of the U.S. version is permitted in Utah and tells buyers elsewhere to check local regulations before purchasing.

Where this gets especially interesting
The battery you already own may eventually do more than wait for the next outage
Europe already has grid-tie hubs that connect compatible portable power stations to household energy systems. EcoFlow PowerStream works with selected DELTA and RIVER batteries, while BLUETTI’s Balco Transfer Hub supports selected BLUETTI models and some third-party power stations. A U.S.-certified 120V version of this idea could turn a camping or backup battery into an everyday energy asset.
Does Plug-In Solar Make Sense for You?
Plug-in solar is most interesting when a traditional rooftop system feels like too much.
- You want to start small. A few panels can offset part of your normal daytime load without trying to run the entire house.
- You rent or do not want rooftop solar. A removable balcony, patio, shed, or ground-mounted setup may be more realistic.
- You use electricity at night. Battery storage can move midday solar into the evening.
- You have time-of-use rates. Smart storage can become useful for shifting energy away from expensive hours.
- You already own a portable power station. Grid-tie adapters are an emerging way to get more daily value from that battery.
It is less compelling if your main goal is whole-home backup during long outages or if you have the roof, budget, and electricity use to justify a much larger solar installation.
Before you buy
- Check whether your state currently has a special plug-in solar pathway.
- Check the maximum grid-connected output and any circuit, electrician, or utility-notification rules.
- Verify the exact product or complete system meets the certification requirements that apply to you.
- Make sure you are looking at U.S. 120V hardware, not a European 230V version.
- Decide whether you want simple daytime solar, battery storage, or a path that can use a portable power station you already own.
Bottom line
Plug-in solar fills a useful gap between portable solar gear and a full rooftop installation. The U.S. market is still early, but the combination of simpler solar, smaller batteries, and smarter energy control is becoming a real option rather than just a European curiosity.
